We should support each other’s choices.

We should support each other’s choices in life, right?

I have alway stood by this in my years of supporting young parents. We have all heard the arguments revolving around abortion. We’ve heard about how it is legal in places and illegal in others. How some see it as murder and some see it as an individual choice.

This week, an anti-abortion group where marching (the word protest doesn’t seem right here) and my heart sank. It’s a feeling I can’t really describe. I found myself angry, frustrated and enraged. I’m all for free speech¬†but the way this group were forcing their views was shocking.

In the middle of a crowded high street in a busy city, they had banners decorated with photos of dead fetus’ and they were graphic. I was disturbed looking at them, Lord knows what the young children in the area were thinking.

What worried me though was that there were lots of girls aged about 14+ walking around town and what if one of them was pregnant? What if one of them has had an abortion or is currently trying to decide if that’s the right decision for her? This group of people were being very vocal about their views to the point of shouting at people and it upsets me.¬†Whether you think it is right or wrong, shouting and graphically displaying material about that around children is shocking.

I guess with this, I just wanted to reach out to any young parents or parents-to-be who may feel affected by it;

Your decision is yours to make. Everyone will have their viewpoint on it and feel they are right, but at the end of it all, you’re the one that has to live with it. Always do what is right for you and don’t be afraid to ask for support. Support for young parents is never shouted about but we are here and we will NEVER judge the decision you make or hold it against you, no matter what it is.

Okay, I feel my rant is over.

The community of young parents I have met over the years is a fabulous, welcoming, supportive and non-judgmental one. We’re always here for you.
